The Dangerous Allure of Prop-less Mentalism

The following essay is a modified excerpt from my book The Dangerous Allure of Prop-less Mentalism

Within the theoretical realm, Prop-less Mentalism is quite a sexy idea to think about. Imagine having the ability to perform any of your favorite Mentalism demonstrations with nothing but the power of language. Imagine knowing there is a whole community of pseudo psychologists and mystics working around the clock developing and publishing linguistic techniques for the purpose of co-creating the reality of telepathy with the lay public. You tell yourself that once you’re able to collect a wide range of these linguistic techniques, you can finally throw your pens; billets; swami gimmicks; peek wallets; EDC plastic cards; impression pads; electronic dice; ESP cards; books and magazines into the abyss that is your Magic Drawer (if these items are not already there to begin with).

Similar to online dating, more often than not, Prop-less Mentalism is a lot less attractive than what over-priced PDFs, armchair mentalists, and our secret dreams and desires make it out to be. Our secret dreams and desires… the ability to divine concrete pieces of information like names, countries, sun signs/dates of birth, numbers and colors through the cleverness of our linguistic prowess and psychological cleverness.

based on my observations, I feel the mainstream community of prop-less mentalists are guilty of letting their secret dreams and desires get in the way of presenting deceptive, justified, and genuinely emotionally engaging Mentalism to laymen. That’s even if a lot of them can ever summon the courage of performing beyond their friends and family members, but that’s a rant for another post. Couple these secret dreams and desires with inexperienced mentalists who have misunderstood the principles of cognitive re-framing and laymen washing away failures, then it’s no wonder that mentalists who prefer physical and mechanical deceptive methods scoff at the idea of billet-less divinations and predictions.

About a year ago, I read a modern book on Prop-less Mentalism. I wasn’t too crazy about the material contained in the book itself, but the introduction to it was of great use as it inspired me to clarify and organize my relationship to Prop-less Mentalism. Doing so, in my work as a mentalist, has made me not only more aware of the type of prop-less methods I like, but also consider which ones I’m willing to expand and share with laymen. As of right now, I consider the realm of Prop-less Mentalism to consist of two regions: Psycho-Mechanical and Psycho-Spiritual.

Understand that this broad classification of Prop-less Mentalism is only really useful when examining prop-less pieces that aim to mainly demonstrate powers of telepathy and precognition. With show pieces like PK Touches, which mainly consist of having to somehow secretly touch a participant, I don’t think the following system is of much use.

The region of Psycho-Mechanical has been popularized by the published work of mentalists such as Atlas Brookings, Peter Turner, and Fraser Parker; and include methods such as Magicians’ Choice, Invisible Restrictions (psychological forces), Chunneling, Letter Branches (Anagrams), Fishing, the Repeat-it ploy, CUPS… the list could go on and on so I’’ll stop here. I hope this list is enough to express what the Psycho-Mechanical region of method looks like.

The region of Psycho-Spiritual is where methods like readings, suggestion/hypnosis, Mind/Body medicine, and physiological responses tend to live. This region of Prop-less Mentalism can typically stand on its own as an entertaining and empowering piece for both casual and professional environments that laymen will find worthy of their time and attention. Subtle deceptive techniques can be added to act as convincers, cherries, and/or as a nice theatrical ending to the piece being shared.

My understanding of Magic has led me to believe that the Dangerous Allure of Prop-less Mentalism is defined as the over-use of Psycho-Mechanical methods that lead to the bastardization of a demonstration of Mentalism.

This can be witnessed in direct demonstrations of mind-reading in which mentalists believe that guiding their participants through obviously restricted, convoluted, ten-minute procedures (and I can tell you, this is not hyperbole that close-minded traditionalists use to discourage people from experimenting with prop-less philosophy) to divine arbitrary pieces of information such as randomly generated numbers and countries.

Muddying the Reading is what can occur when this bastardization occurs in reading-based material. This occurs when mentalists attempt to justify using many Psycho-Mechanical techniques in a routine by claiming to give participants a psychic reading. This often convinces them that they’ve created a prop-less piece that is “conversational.”

I will put my hands up and say that it’s possible I’m not the right kind of mentalist that can expertly pull this type of Mentalism off. Giving my participants space to talk during their reading only when I need to hit on what half of the year they’re born in, or that they were born in a warm season, or that the random name they have in mind has four letters doesn’t seem conversational to me. I would even dare to say, based on the trailers and laymen reactions that are tied to some of these projects, that a lot of these creators can’t expertly pull them off either.

I label a piece of stand-alone Prop-less Mentalism as “muddy” when it’s possible success requires more than two Psycho-Mechanical procedures. Taking a plot I hold dear to my heart, the Zodiac Divination, I’ve learned versions that require multiple Psycho-Mechanical babble to just get to three possible signs! Like having to use more Psycho-Mechanical methods to narrow these options down wasn’t torture enough!

It may seem from what I’ve written thus far that I have a strong distaste for Prop-less Mentalism. This couldn’t be farther from the truth! In actuality, I deeply love Prop-less Mentalism; I’m simply quite particular as to how this arena of Mentalism should look and feel like for a modern day audience- and to me, it shouldn’t look and feel like a game of Twenty Questions. To me, there shouldn’t be half-assed justifications to get people to think of “random” arbitrary information. To me, good Prop-less Mentalism shouldn’t only exist to fuel delusional, casual “mentalists” who think having their hour long set filled with Hanging Statements, the Repeat-It ploy, and four-way verbal outs is considered powerful mind-reading.

My hope for the future of Prop-less Mentalism is for us as a community to be genuinely honest with ourselves. Are some of us going prop-less because it’s the best way- aesthetically and methodologically- to tell the story we want to share with laymen; or is it because we can go prop-less just for the sake of it. I believe your answer reveals a lot as to the type of mentalist you are when performing to the lay public.

In my next blog post concerning Prop-less Mentalism, I’ll be sharing the foundational principles I keep in mind when I feel inspired to learn and create a piece of prop-less Magic.

Best Wishes,

Good Day fine minded folk! Today, Collin and I explored one of the most interesting ideas in Mentalism: the Anti-Tada.
